Caboose ground throws and atlas turnouts
Posted by fosrad on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 12:50 PM
This is the first time I am installing a ground throw. It seems like the "hook" to connect an Atlas turnout to a Caboose Ind. ground throw should be installed 90 degrees from the "T" mount currently present on the ground throw. This would entail slotting the arm of the throw to accept the hook connector. Am I correct or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Not entirely sure I follow your question and I do not have a switch and throw in front of me, but when I did my install, I simply put the connector on the throw in the center hole of the switch arm and cut off either sideof the T (the other two holes). Worked fine, looks fine. Hope this helps; good luck.

It depends on which version of the Caboose ground throw you have. There is one version that comes with fittings for each type of Turnout. I think it the 204s.
Thanks, Kevin

There's a topic on the NMRA's Introduction to Model Railroading pages called "Install a Ground Throw' that might be of some help.

You can use the #218 throws which come with several interchangable ends.

Or you can just cut the plastic off the throwbar and this will open up the hole and you can then use the regular #202 throw.

I have done it both ways.

I am now moving my hand throws to the edge of the layout so that the operators do not have to reach through the scenery (very operations orientated layout). It may not be very prototypical but then that way oversized ground throw isn't either!

I use music wire to connect the throw to the turnout and then cover up the wire with plastic tubing and with scenery. I can always go back and add scale detailed ground throws and still have the turnout work.

You just have to be more creative when taking pictures to keep the big ground throws out of the picture.
