Thrown / closed vs normal / reverse turnouts?
Posted by gmpullman on Thursday, March 3, 2005 3:37 AM
I have always used the terminology "normal" and "reverse" to indicate the position of turnout points, normal being the main or primary route.
I am interested in DCC route control using stationary decoders and I'm getting confused with "thrown" and "closed" terms... I'm sure the N & R was used by the railroads as I've seen permanent markers on turnouts to indicate the NORMAL route. Why did the DCC manufacturers go with this thrown & closed thing? Or is this the modern terminology used by the railroad nowadays?

No, the railroads still use Normal and Reversed. You have just run into modelers who are not familiar with the prototype. I changed my control panel some time back to show N and R as that makes more sense to me as well.

Thanks, Roger...
I'll just have to translate the Digitrax manual... Wi***hey would have consulted someone "in the know" before they wrote the book. Maybe they didn't want to confuse "reverse" as in locomotive direction.
