what size of foam is best for N?

I'm having a heck of a time finding anything larger than 3/4" of pink foam
in the houston area. Can I glue to layers together to make it thicker then
lay the road bed and track, I bought some liquid nails project glue, but it says will not bond foam to foam???
I woking on a 25"x52" N layout as my first project, I want something thicker
than 1/2" so I can carve me a river or lake. 1 1/2" would be good if i can glue two pices...any other ideas?

sure, you can glue 2 sheets together! Just be SURE to use white or yellow carpenters wood glue-i.e. Elmers, Woodland Scenics "Foam-Tac Glue", Aillens Tacky Glue, any white glue from a craft store should be ok.

Also there is a latex version of liquid nails which is foam safe.

...which specifically says "not for foam-to-foam bonds". And they mean it; the stuff doesn't hold for poo. Stick with something sheaper and more readily available, like wood glue or SILICONE caulk (latex gives a weaker bond, so is better for laying track).

You should be able to get away with a single layer of 3/4" foam, so long as you've got at least 1/4" of plywood under it (and at least 16" OC bracing). Go with at least two layers of 3/4" if you want to add contours.

Since you can laminate multiple layers of foam using white or yellow glues, the thickness you choose is influenced by three factors:

1) What's available, apparenlty only 3/4".
2) How far below grade you want to contour.
3) How much lamination hassle you're willing to put up with.
