[8] I just got off the NMRA site looking for the proper spacing on a double track layout. I haven't seen math terms like they gave me in 40+ years. Can anybody give me a hint? I want to run a double track main with 24" radius outside and 22 inside. What is the distance from track center to track center for this pattern? I thought I read somewhere that it was around 1 1/2 inches with slightly more in curves-is this close? Thanks in advance from the trainnut57

2" on straight track and use your logest cars on the curves (usually passenger) to determine clearance. The end overhang of the car on the inside will hit the middle of the car on the outside if it is too close.

Curve radius is measured to the centerline of the track, so the distance, center line to centerline on a 22" -24" double track would be 2". That may not be enough distance between tracks to allow for overhang depending on the length of the locos and cars your running. I believe John Armstrong recommended 2 1/4" spacing in curves. It might be worth the time to test it with your longest locos and cars to see what's needed for your layout.

1 Y6b on 24" and a Heavy weight passenger: Test 1 was 24" rad
2" HIT
2.25 " Clear
Test 2 Hudson pulling heavy weight with heavy weight on the outer track
2" Enigine OK car HIT
2.125 Engine OK car HIT
2.25 Engine OK Car CLOSE
2.375 Engine and car CLEAR.
Sorry for all the stats but I have been plaing this thing for 3 years so it is down to that.
