The amount of wiring is not the problem per se, it's how many things are you trying to run at once. If the loco is the only thing you are running, then you have introduced a short into the system. Try disconnecting every thing and then add one wire at a time and see if your loco runs. If you are trying to run other things - switch motors, lighting, another train, etc., then you may have more than a small pack can handle. Again disconnect them all and add them back one at a time, testing with each one.

i have all track laid and an old tyco dc power pack 6 va total output. i could run a loco with until i started adding feeders and buss wires. 18 ga and 14 ga. is this to much wire for the pack. or have i messed up?
