Connecting tortise operating wire to Shinohara Proto:87 Stores modified turnout

I have just modified my Shinohara turnouts to make them "DCC friendly" and in the process installed Proto:87 stores switch rods. These rods do not allow for installing a tortise machine operating wire in the center of the operating bar. I am thinking about drilling a new hole in the operating bar just outside of the stock rails for the wire and gluing on a cosmetic layr of ballast on top of the bar.
Any recommendations/suggestions?
