New Milestone, Part 2
Posted by rrinker on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 4:55 PM
Early I posted about how my father-in-law was adament about having a provision to run using Dc or DCC, and how he recently had me order some decoders for a few of his locos, to start the process of converting ALL of them.
Well, I just finished installing a decoder in his first DCC loco, a Proto2K SW9. I used an NCE SW9-SR decoder, and yes, I did take pictures. Some century I will upload them and update my web page, in the meantime, I will explain any glitches here: not many.
I DID have to file the sides of the LED, I used a 3mm (T-1) Golden WHite LED for the front light (the decoder has convenient solder pads for this, plus the resistor is already in place), and when I tried to assemble the shell, it was hanging up at the front. A standard 3mm LED doesn;t quite fit in the notch in the weight. I ended up filing the base of the LED (didn;t have to go intot he body, just the 'flange' at the base) so it would nestle into the notch, and everythign fit perfectly after that.
All in all, a fairly simple install, just requires soldering. No way around that, these locos are older P2K's and don't have a DCC socket.
