I stand corrected.  Of course, what do we Californians know about the other coast?

 

 

Not sure.  I did my open water Scuba certification dive in Monterey and the water was very cold!

It had a New England theme (there was a small coastal town with a lighthouse, and a sawmill in the back half of the layout).

 

 

The mention of New England and the lighthouse immediately brought to mind the Rice Harbor layout deisgned and built by David Pop a few years ago.  This might be the layout you're thinking of.  Check it out in the Track Plan Database.

So, I seem to recall this was a featured layout in an issue of MRR about a decade ago (possibly a bit longer).

• It was a 4x8 HO design.
• It was built to be portable.
• It had a New England theme (there was a small coastal town with a lighthouse, and a sawmill in the back half of the layout).
• It had a fairly minimalist track plan (I want to say an oval with one passing track and a few sidings).
• It was extremely well-detailed and had a realistically minimal number of buildings (it was designed to look uncluttered).

Does this ring any bells for anyone? I tried a number of different Google search combinations and couldn't come up with any matching photos. If anyone could point me in the direction of an issue, I'd be much obliged.
