Matching Athearn boxcar paint
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 27, 2005 2:16 PM
This kinda got buried in the General forum, so I'll try here.

I'm in the process of weathering, and in general improving the appearance of a bunch of older and newer Athearn rolling stock. One of the things I'm doing is painting the black brake wheels to more closely match the body color.

Polly Scale Boxcar Red works great for about 90% of my Athearn stock (that's in 'traditional' boxcar colors, anyway). However, there are some Athearn cars that use a more reddish color brown paint that I just can't quite seem to match. Boxcar red is too brown, and Special Oxide Red is too red. Rather than buying a bottle of all 11 or so variations on dark red/Tuscan/maroon that Polly Scale has an trying to find a match, does anyone here have a suggestion for a color to use? It doesn't matter if it's an exact match, since I'll be weathering the car after painting, so it'll be blended it. I just want a color that's "close enough" so the brake wheel doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Thanks!
