Speaker Selection Assistance
Posted by FRRYKid on Friday, October 7, 2022 2:11 AM

Got yet another one for my Forum friends. I found an old MRC 8000 Tech II Sound Generator System (Diesel horn and steam whistle) that I want to integrate into my DC layout. The one problem is the speaker that should have been included was missing. The requirements for the speaker per the instructions are 8 ohm and 1 watt. The instructions for the hole in the baffle show the speaker itself as 3 5/8" in diameter with corners for mounting but I think that's a bit flexible. The instructions suggest using the baffle but as the copyright on the instructions is nearly 30 years old, I imagine that requirement might have changed for a modern speaker. What <$20 speaker would be the best to use as a substitute?

As usual, any assistance that can be provided would be most welcomed.

The dynamics of air and sound hasn't changed, a speaker is always going to sound much, much better with a properly baffled enclosure.

I had one of those when they first came out, not sure but I think I found a speaker and enclosure made for like portable radio / cassette players (a la "Sony Walkman") and connected that up. If you search I think you may find similar speakers available for hooking up to computers or other devices that would work.
