Which back issue do I need to dig out?
Posted by Morpar on Monday, July 25, 2022 6:45 AM

Years ago I remember MR had an article where the author built a model of the Stoney Creek arch bridge in British Columbia with girders and parts from the Central Valley 150' truss bridge kits. I tried looking in the magazine archive for which issue, but had no luck. Can someone tell me the trick to searching the magazine database or which issue I need to dig out of my library? It would literally take me hours to dig through all of the back issues in the basement, mostly because I would get distracted and start reading articles in them! Thanks

Good Luck, Morpar

Have a look at the April 1991, MR, there’s an article “Building Black Bear Bridge” based on the CPs Stoney Creek bridge.
If it’s not the one, then I apologise for distracting you! Smile, Wink & Grin

Exactly the article I was thinking of! Thank you! Now the bigger question, did you just know which issue it was in, or were you able to search for it somehow? I don't want to have to make a post every time I want to find an old article.

You can sign up for the "Unlimited Digital Membership", which gives you access to all prior MR (and other Kalmbach mags) online. It includes a search function.

Otherwise, you could try to track down the 75-year DVD-Rom archive that Kalmbach did a while back.

Glad to help.

I used the 75th Model Railroader DVD ROM. The search function may be a bit funky; for example, by entering “Stoney Creek Bridge” and setting the search parameter from 1980 to 2009, I ended up with 126 options, but the article was “easy” (?) to find as I recognised the photo of the bridge on the first page of the article.

Still, I have absolutely no regrets about buying the DVD.

I can’t speak for the online option referred to by Stix, but it could be well worth a look…
