Hi all,
I hadn't posted in a long time, but wanted to share some in progress pics of the shelf layout. Still a long, long way from being done, but I've found that just putting pieces into place, even temporarily helps create a sense of accomplishment and encourages me to keep moving forward.
The backdrop is by Larc Products. The building is a South River Model Works Wrisley Papers kit I built up per the instructions. The scenery is mainly Woodland Scenics with dirt from Scenic Express. The freight cars are Red Caboose with a Proto2000 USRA 0-8-0 for power. Figures are CMW, Wiking (tractor), and Walthers (orange fuel truck). Figures are Preiser (I'll use nothing but.) Track is Micro-Engineering Code 70.
I'll add more scenery, especially in the back where I'll add a tree line, get the building in place, after the scenery is done, ballast on the track, and so on and so on.

Looks great!
Love seeing pictures of other people's layouts for inspiration.
Thanks for posting!

Hope your cat thinks well of it too.
This is beautiful, Alvie! Thanks for posting. I love that building. I wonder how those green doors operate on the upper floors. Would there be a swing-out boom to haul stuff up from the platform, or to lower stuff into a gon? Very nice detail work around your trestle abutments. I'm all about abutments these days. I dream about them, and have nightmares about them. Their little shoes, too. Never even noticed how bridges were built in all my highway travels, but I've been really studying them lately because of the need to include two bridges almost over top of each other on my layout -- one a multiple span brdige -- and almost all the abutments had to be located over empty space four feet off a cement floor. It's been a challenge.
Your layout is inspiring.
EDIT: Duh... I didn't notice at first, the boom is up at the ridge corner.

Returning to model railroading after 40 years and taking unconscionable liberties with the SP&S, Northern Pacific and Great Northern roads in the '40s and '50s.
Good afternoon Alvie.
That's a shelf layout???
Gives the illusion of looking deeper with your good taste in backdrop choices. It doesn't take away from the foreground but nicely adds to it. Your modeling looks great and I see what you were saying about how you like the colored WS tree flock in the Diner last night.
Most of my layout is going to be Tall Timber Pines but you got me seriously thinking about a Fall-themed layout mixing all colored trees with the Evergreens.
The Fall is my favorite time of the year and I'm impressed with your modeling Alvie

Thanks for the positive commentary! The ballasting is on my to-do list, right now the trackwork is just Woodland Scenics' roadbed with Micro-Engineering Code70 flex track I painted. I'll post pics after ballasting. I've heard many good things about Arizona Rock and Mineral so I'll try out their ballast materials.
Excellent modelling! I agree with all the comments above. The weathering on the buildings and rolling stock is just right.

Nicely-done, Alvie, and that backdrop really gives the scene some nice depth.

Wow, that's some outstanding modeling!
Keep going, very impressive work!
I thought I should give an update as to where I'm at with it. I did find some Super Tree material, and added a lot of trees to the background and some in foreground areas. and I've added some ballast, and started on the team track scene. Ballast is Woodland Scenics gray blend in fine. I hated ballasting! But the results are worth it. Rockwork is rocks cast in hydrocal from Woodland Scenics molds and I painted with craftstore acrylic paints using the "Leopard spotting" technique with washes of india ink and alcohol. Backdrop is by Larc Products.
Components are from Chooch and Walthers.
Weathered Red Caboose flatcar and Rapido boxcar
I'll post more pics in time.
Alvie, those photos are great, and your layout progress is going quite well. Those Super Trees look fantastic and really add even more depth to your shelf layout. Amazing!
That Woodland Scenics Fine Gray Blend ballast is very similar to what I used on my last layout. The only difference is that I used the Medium ballast instead of Fine.
I should note that the camera makes the ballast appear whiter than it actually is, which is a medium gray color in actual appearance. I don't know why the camera picks it up as whitish in appearance, but I had the same issue.
Keep up the good work, and keep us posted on your progress.
