Has anybody used sanded grout for ballast? Seem to remember an article about it, but I can't find it

I've used unsanded black grout to model the colour of spilled coal around coaling towers, and have mixed unsanded brown grout with ballast for some less-used tracks, but not tried the sanded variety for ballasting.
