Hey, Many thanks everyone. That was what I was looking for as my woodworking skills are pretty grim. My Elementary and Junior High shop teachers promissed me all "A's" if I promised not to touch anything.

I agree that modeling the benchwork is not a recognized hobby. Give me prefab stuff anytime.

I'm using Sievers benchwork on my first layout and I love it. It is more expensive but if I factor in absolutely no woodworking skills with having to buy several power tools, it was worth every nickel. Plus if I ever have to tear a section out or move, the modular effect will make it much easier to dismantle with minimal damage. Sievers is very cooperative. They even made custom-length legs for me so that a module I'm building will meet NMRA standard height and there was no extra charge.

I just completed the installation of my Sievers benchwork on top of heavy duty shelf brackets and I love it! It wasn't cheap but everything screws and bolts together cleanly, I can move sections around at will because all holes are standard and line up, the wood is superior to the quality that I can purchase at my local home store and all the tedious work is already completed. All that is needed is a philips screwdriver (or drill driver bit) and a 7/16" open end or socket wrench.

So instead of spending days in a cold garage in the Detroit suburbs in the middle of winter I completed the assembly of the benchwork in a matter of hours. And now I'm ready to install the foam and shortly after that, begin laying track.
Modeling the Ballard Terminal Railroad (a former Northern Pacific line) in Ballard, a district north of downtown Seattle in 1968, on a two-rail O-scale shelf switching layout. The Ballard Terminal didn't exist in 1968 but my version of the BTRR is using NP power. (My avatar photo was taken by Doc Wightman of Seattle)

That pre-fab stuff is nice, but way to expensive!!!!!
All you have to do is sit down and figure out how much space you have and design a rough track plan. Take of the dimensions and make a list and take it to your neighborhood lumber yard and see how they will charge to cut the lumber for you.
It will be much cheaper and a lot easier to transport and then you can order pizza and invite a couple of buddies over and with some Elmer's glue, a cordless screwdriver, a level, and a little work (Fun), you'll have your benchwork up in no time with a lot of money leftover to buy some more RR stuff!!!!!
Good luck,
gtirr

I don't remember a place, but if you have local hardware home depot, outside of there is a lot of workers, I bet some of them have building experience. Buy the wood at the depot, and let them build it. Should cost a whole lot less. Or you can have bigger layout for same price. [:D][:D][:D]

Prefab Benchwork

Does anyone remember a company that advertises prefab. benchwork? My wife is out of action for awhile with arthritis and I recently had rotator cuff surgery so we have to go the prefab route.
Thanks.
