Modeling riprap

In the real world riprap can be anything from 4" to 2'.  If you have any on your layout how did you model it?

I haven't done any riprap on my layout, but looking at Woodland Scenics track ballast, medium, would fit your dimensions.

Highway work sometimes usues heavier riprap, which the WS course ballast would fit.

You could get a bucket of pea gravel, and pick out the tiny or broken pieces.

I used WS Talus to support the dirt road to No Problem Joe’s house.

Used A.R.M. Cascade Gray small boulders #1305 for a small section of rip-rap.  Piled it up against a base of cured/colored Sculptamold and drizzled on a mixture of 50/50 Elmers white Glue-All and water.

I use real rock material, sifted only to remove the overscale rocks.  Sand is applied over the top to represent compacted fill from cinders and other finer textures, and that in turn serves as a base for ballast.

With a railroad that's pretty-well all up-and-down, I have quite a few areas where that type of fill is necessary...

I used Durabond patching plaster which had hardened in the mixing container before it could be used.  Most of it was broken-up using a hammer.  It has been tinted a couple of times with washes of thinned paints, but I think that the glue mixture which holds it in place prevents the paint from penetrating.  I'll have to try something a little stronger.

I can't seem to find that.  Can you supply a link?

I also need to go through my pile of plaster castoffs.  I probably have plenty of suitable pieces there.  See, it pays to save everything!

Duh. I should have realized that stood for Arizona Rock and Mineral.
