nix the bulbs and go with fiber optic strands and white LEDs with a single 580 ohm resistor..i just did my first three locos using the fiber optics and white LEDs and it was the most awesome lighting i've ever seen on a locomotive....I used 1.5 mm strands for the main headlights and .75 mm strands for the ditch lights...all i did was cut to fit and flare the fiber optics at one end with the flame from a candle...glue them into the light sockets of the engine shell.... gather them all together in a bundle....point the opposite end of the fiber optic strands toward the LED that was wired to the regular lighting circuit for the regular bulb lighting of the locomotive...., hold it all together with heat shrink tubing slid over the entire assembly....heat it until the tubing shrank , repeat the above steps for the rear lighting using another White LED, and put the engine shell back on...VERY IMPRESSIVE LIGHTING! here are the results: http://community.webshots.com/photo/137793353/238594941OhvBte Chuck

I don't know about the Atlas, but the Proto 2000 and Athearn Genesis use 1.5 Volt bulbs. If you're installing a decoder, put a 1K Ohm resistor in the light circuit. A Proto 2000 with a mars light uses a dual filament bulb to achieve the flashing effect, so putting a decoder into it requires that both filaments be wired together through a resistor, or bulb replacement. Naturally, you have to have a decoder with mars light function for it to work.

I was wondering what the specs were for headlight bulbs for the following locomotives:
1) Proto 2000 HO GP30 ( I think it's 1.5V)
2) Atlas HO GP40 ( I think it's higher voltage as it's DCC ready).
