Mask the opening of the slide switch with a piece of tape, as well as the pivots of the point blades. I also found it better not to ballast the switches between the frog and the point blades.

I'm sorry if this is a redundant thread... I tried to find an answer to this before posting but didn't find anything quite on point.
Does anyone have any tips on how to apply ballast to the Kato turnouts to keep the ballast from finding its way into the slide switch opening and into the internal workings, and from between the points and the stock rails?
