I know it's a big ask, but I would find a way to make the space larger so that the oval main line could be larger.  From there, keeping the innards pretty much the same, I'd build a switching lead, even if it had to curl some and run concentric to the main for a bit.

If you are working with a 5 x 9. Then a yard should be doable on that space.  Keep in mind a lot of yards were not big.  They could be a short two stub track situation.
i would do is figure out the needed capacity is.    then see where it would make sense or make operations more interesting.

Make a couple drawings and post here.   To get more feed back before doing building.

Welcome to the forum. Your first few messages are moderated, so there will be a delay in them appearing (especially over a weekend), but that passes quickly.

I have enough room for a 9x5 or 10x5 layout

If so, you can accomplish a lot, if you are willing to look beyond the published plan. One good way to get help is to post a sketch of your available space, including room entrance(s) and any obstructions, and then folks may have some suggestions.

Posting images is a little different on this forum, as they must be hosted elsewhere, but the first couple of posts in this thread explain it.

Good luck with your layout.

How much room is there in that spot?  Even 18" of track as an extension there would help with switching.  But, it's rather important that something be there.

Welcome to the forum

That extension is critical to switch the yard in the center of the layout.  If you add it to the long side, you better have extra long arms, if the other side is against the wall.

Would like to build the subject layout using Kato unitrack digital. I have enough room for a 9x5 or 10x5 layout, but not enough room for the 1x6 swing up staging area. Does any one have a track plan that does not include the 1x6. If necessary i could possibly add it on the long side. This is my first try at setting up a layout and would like to minimize mistakes.
