Adding Water Under The Vertical Lift Bridge
Posted by richhotrain on Monday, April 13, 2020 6:40 AM
This is my fourth and final thread on scratch building the PRR vertical lift bridge over the South Branch of the Chicago River near downtown Chicago.

My first thread on this scratch build project covered the bridge.

My second thread on this scratch build project covered the towers.

My third thread on this scratch build project - Finishing and Installing the bridge.

This thread shows the finished bridge after adding water under the bridge, using Envirotex Lite 2-part epoxy.

I hope you like the finished look.

Thanks, Frankie. It's the "so far" that I am worried about. LOL.

Lots more ballasting and landscaping in front of me.

I certainly agree...great-looking water, and I especially like the colour of it.

Wow!  Now that's a bridge, grand scene.  Reflections in the water look really cool.

You've achieved something that most people can only admire and not have done themselves, Rich.  Very commendable.  I hope you get a lot of positive feedback because you deserve it.

Thanks so much for your kind words, Crandell. I have to say, it was quite a challenging project from beginning to end. But, in the end, I was more than pleased with the results.

And so you should be, very nice!

Excellent craftsmanship, very realistic. So do you like that water product better than the WS water?  I need to eventually pour a ocean port and I'm not sure which one is better.

Thanks, Gary.

I have used Woodland Scenics Realistic Water twice on my old layout. The first time was to add water under a single bascule bridge, and it turned out fine. The second time was to add water under a pair of side-by-side bascule bridges. I poured the Realistic Water a bit deeper than the first time, and it took almost two months for it to clear.

But the worst part of WS Realistic Water is that it never truly hardens. I found that out when I tried to remove a tug boat before I demolished the old layout. It had partially sunk into the water and had to be carved out with a box cutter.

Envirotex Lite dries clear immediately upon pour, and it hardens like glass within 72 hours. I posted a thread on the use of Envirotex Lite.

Sheldon

Thanks, Sheldon. Good to hear from you.

I need to post some more photos. I have been working on the ballasting and landscaping on the aisle side of the layout. So, pretty soon, I will be able to display the "final" finished scene.
