Building Flat-Backboard Question?
Posted by Trainzman2435 on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 6:27 AM

Hello all, i have been looking at possibly adding some industral building flats to a portion of my N scale layout to add some switching action to it. I was wondering if there is any rule of thumb when it comes to the heigth and length of the backdrop for which the building flats would be located? The idea i had was to add a straight section of masonite that would NOT be located against my back wall or the outer most track. It would be located more twoards the center of the layout but im not sure what i could do in order to make the section of backboard for the building flats to blend in with the actual backdrop board that would be located just behind the building flats? I am not sure about the heigth i would make the building flat backboard? I guess tall enough to accomodate the tallest building flat??? How would a person blend the actual backdrop into the track and the track into the backboard for the building flat??? Maybe im off my rocker with this idea? Has anyone ever done this or seen one done this way before? On my N scale layout, my benchwork table top is 50" from the floor with an added 2" of foam board for sub road. My highest point on my layout is 4" at a 2% grade so i was thinking i would make my backdrop and center divider on the penninsula a flat 24" in heigth?? Anyways, any help, suggestions or information would really be helpful....Thanks everyone!

Are you talking about something like this, where the backdrop sticks out from the layout?

Look at the center of the picture, you can see the vertical edge of a section of bacdrop that sticks out at you, to devide a scene.

Here's the other side of the same backdrop:

Here you can clearly see how the backdrop sticks out from the rest of the layout.

I like your idea of doing a 24" high divider on the peninsula.

Mike.

Mike, that looks great and yse sir, thats what i was talking about. Any idea how i might support or anchor it to my benchtop? I have 2" foam board on top of 1/2" plywood....Also, what might be a good heigth considering my main backdrop is going to be 24" high? Thanks !
