Signal placement
Posted by 5150WS6 on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 8:29 PM

Hi guys,

We have some signals we want to put on the layout that will be upgraded later to better more prototypical versions. But for now I'm having trouble with the placement of the signals.

Obviously there are a few that are near the edge that will have to be closer than what should be but still clear but I'm unsure and haven't been able to find how close approximately the signal goes next to the rail.

1 1/2" looks ok and clears, 2" looks ok as well though. I just want them to Not be too far out.

Anyone have any general advice? These are very basic single head three color type signals. For now. the replacements will be similar just more geared towards SP.

Thanls for the input!

Mike

You didn’t mention your scale.  I model the SP 1950s in HO scale and I mounted my signals ⅞” from the right rail to the center of the signal mast.  That equals about 6½’ from the rail.

It’s been about 25 years since I installed my original signals and I can’t remember where I got that spacing.

The NMRA HO Standard Gauge side clearance is .6786” or 5’ from the rail.

EDIT:

I did a bit of research and found some SP signal specs.  Mine are a bit too close, should be 1.1” from the right rail.

Mel,

Thank you for the response. I am HO scale. Sorry I forgot to add that. Your post answers many questions!

Thank you sir!
