HO Scale Wildcat Central
Posted by Outsailing86 on Sunday, December 8, 2019 6:29 PM

Has anyone built the Jan 2001 Project Layout, the Wildcat Central? Seems like an interesting plan, just had some questions about how to layout the track.

Would you use 2-1/2" Track Centers?

Does superelevating the curves make a difference? Or more trouble than its worth.

Is the 7/16" Offset in 16" easement correct? Seams very broad.

I'd consider making a drop down gate where the bridge section is.

I'd change to an Ohio scenery theme, with Conrail locomotives. Any recommendations on the industries? Would be awesome to keep the autorack track, just not sure what I'd do with the other ones.

Would you make the plan with so many benchwork sections, or use 4x8 sheets with less seams?

Thanks for your help!

I think super elevating curves works fine if you have wide, broad curves.  I did it with 24" radius, and I'm kinda wishing I didn't.  Although I might have elevated the curves too much.

With all the changes you want, maybe consider designing your own layout.

There's a nice article in the May 2013 issue on track planning, using pencil, paper, drawing tools and templates.

Not all of us have access to the archives.  The track plan is here

Superelevation is for appearence not function unless you are 1:1 scale.  I personally wouldn't bother with it.
