Simulated Lantern Lighting
Posted by staybolt on Thursday, December 5, 2019 7:02 PM

Anybody know of a source(s) for small (1 mm diam.) glass or plastic red and green jewel-like inserts that could be glued into the cup-shaped lens pockets in HO turnout switch stand lanterns? I know I could use glossy paint, but I'd rather go for the sparkle that a jewel's facets would provide. So far I've only found sizes that might work in G scale, but not HO.

I would try craft stores, or maybe Walthers.

MV Products #220 and #221 has 1.6mm 0.063" red and green lenses.

I think MV Products is out of business and Walthers lists it as out of stock, but there are plenty on Ebay.

In another thread in another forum someone suggested "gemstones" from Hobby Lobby.  These are also called "bead strand"  looks like the smallest is 2mm.

Hi staybolt,

Precision Scale sells marker lights that come with jewels. I didn't find the jewels listed separately but you might give them a call.

https://www.precisionscaleco.com/

The marker lights are on page 56 of the HO Freight Car catalogue.

I have several packages from Utah Pacific. I believe Tomar handles their product now:

Perhaps you could inquire there?

I searched the Tomar website and I couldn't see any jewels listed separately. I suspect that eBay is your best bet.

Precision Scale doesn't list them separately either, but they do have jewels in the their marker light kits. Correction, Precision Scale does list jewel lenses in their General Use "All Scales" Sundry Items catalogue #9748, page 23.

From the link I provided in my reply:

 Tomar by Edmund, on Flickr

So, here's the ironic twist. Both Tomar and Precision Scale have been bought by Teresa and  Joel Prantle in Pasco, Washington. They are trying to keep production going of both the PSC parts and the Tomar signals. (TJ Trains, also in my eBay link above)

So, you can get them from their eBay store, shipping is a little high but you can get several items and save a little on combined shipping, they also have a big inventory of decals.

I don't do Facebook but you can still see their postings:

So, essentially, Precision Scale and Tomar are under the same roof. I've been dealing with them for years. Give them a call and see what they have on hand.

That's good to know!  TJ is my go-to and has been for a long time.
