Help with SuperTrees, pls
Posted by kasskaboose on Monday, November 18, 2019 7:49 AM

After scouring youtube, this forum, and elsewhere, I still have some questions about SuperTrees.  Don't read wrong: I really like them. Part of the issue is I want to avoid putting on too much ground foam, so the tree doesn't look like a clumpy mess and wasting a ton of foam!

1. Do you use diluted white glue or modge podge?  I've read that the former is cheaper.  If I go that route, what's a suitable ratio of water to glue? Do I "bathe" the trees in the mixture or just spray that on a tree?

2. Should I use coarse or fine SE ground foam?  I tried both, but looks (to me)  like a clumpy mess.  How to apply the foam?  Sprinkling fine foam from a shaker bottle above the tree doesn't cover as fully as I thought.

3. Cover the tree with strong-hold hairspray after adding the foam?

Thanks!

 What I do;

Some trees are painted first,others not. I use cheap hair spray, Aqua Net, buck a can. Leaf and/or Fine foilage,WS and /or SE.

Spray tree,sprinkle onthe green stuff,shake off excess,look at tree.

If not right   repeat.  When It looks as I think it should, spray again and plant

I use diluted matte medium – Available as WS “scenic cement” or pre-mixed from Scenic Express. You can also buy matte medium from the art store and mix your own. Dunk the armature in the solution, shake off the excess and apply foam.

I use Noch fine leaf material (available from Scenic Express). It looks much better than foam but is more expensive. I have used fine foam from WS and also some of the more coarse, loose foam as well. I also use AMSI foam with good results.

Apply the foam over a container to catch amd reuse as much as possible.

Hold the tree upright and sprinkle foam on it until it looks right. Shake off the excess and hang the tree to dry on a line upside down. Mist several times during the drying process with more matte medium.

I have made many hundreds of these tress – great product.

I have used diluted Mod Podge Matte. I scatter Noch leaves on waxed paper. Then I dip the tree in the diluted Mod Podge and kind of roll it around so only the outer parts of the branches get additional leaves.
