All runways vary. They seem to vary from something around 500 feet long for a very small airplanes to over a mile long for large jets. The width can be anywhere from around 20' feet to 100' wide.
For practical purpouses, extending the runway into a backdrop, using a smaller scale, and other tricks would have to be used for HO.

Using the main runway at Newark, NJ as an example, the length is just under 10,000' long. Your scale runway would be about 115' long on your layout. The width is 150' actual or about 21" in HO scale.
If you are thinking of a runway for smaller planes, our local airport in Lake Placid has a 4200' x 60' runway which would only be about 48' x 8" in HO scale.
Getting closer to one that fits in a normal house, another smaller dirt strip near here, Marcy Field, has a 2190' runway which you can model in full in 25' of layout space. Width of the runway is 95' actual, or a little over a foot wide in scale.

this may be like asking "how long is a piece of string", but... I have decided to include an airport in my ho layout. Can anybody suggest the dimensions (both length and width) of a typical runway..if there is such a thing?
thanks
