Bifold Branch Line Switching Layout
Posted by Daves_Trains on Friday, February 22, 2019 3:47 PM

The Bifold Branch line began with the purchase of a used 36" bifold door from the local Habitat for Humanity store. Since it was to be the base of the layout I was not concerned about condition and this door saved some railroad funds. After separating the door it gave me two bases measuring 18" x 79". The layout is mounted to the wall using heavy duty brackets that are screwed into the wall studs.  A 3/4 inch extruded foam top is adhered to the door and is also used as the backdrop. I am using Atlas code 83 flex track with #4 custom line manual switches.
I have been working on the first section that is just about complete. It is the left side of the layout and I am now getting ready to start the second door. I have put together a track plan and was hoping for any thoughts on the plan.  The layout is DCC and I operate 4 axle locomotives with 40' and 50' rolling stock.

I'm no track planning expert, but it looks good to me.  Hows the completed section working out?  Doing what you want it to do?

The "tail" track on the second door, is that for switching the industries at the end?

Did you show this before? or did I see it on a different forum?

Something about the door arrangment seems familar.

Mike, Thanks for the response. The tail track will probably have another industry on it. This is the first time I have posted the layout plan but have posted a couple of pictures on posts. The layout has been working well so far just need more space.

Since you have two industries on the upper right occupying both tracks, it would be difficult to switch any industry placed on the single opposing track without having to move a car, if cars are in front of those industries at the time.  That might make for an interesting switching challenge, or could cross the line over to the nuisance side.
