What is the best way to attach caboose groundthrows to a layout with 1 inch foam board over plywood? Thanks!
Buy some 1/8" or 1/16" aircraft plywood and cut it into small pads. Glue it to the foam and use small screws to attach the ground throw. Simple, Solid, and it Works!

Jim,
Which glue to you recommend?
Thanks, Rick
rather than attaching to the foam, i added a piece of black styrene to the bottom of the track itself, then glued the caboose throw to the styrene ..
i used ca for delrin, think it was dr.mike's ??

Interesting, how thick is the styrene? I've only seen white styrene at LHS. Where do you find black styrene?
I've done it both ways, kinda,. I have slipped and CA ed. a piece of a "for sale" sign under the turnout and screwed the throw to it.
Instead of plywood,I use those sample credit cards glued with caulk to the foam and screwed the throw to it.
both work,
I tryed one, where I just ran a piece of solid wire thru throw and bent it under the foam. It been working, but I can see tha its starting to wobble.
BTW black styrene can be had at most any online supplyer
I just use two #18 1/2" long flathead nails through the holes in the base of the switchstand. But I also have cork roadbed on the foam, and caulk a pad of that under the stand.
I'm about to try a few on just the foam. It will be interesting to see how (if) it works.

Rick,
Since I use cork roadbed underneath my track, I want the base of the Caboose Industries (CI) ground throw to be the identical height of the cork roadbed. So, I cut a piece of cork roadbed the footprint of the ground throw, invert it to match the bevel of the track roadbed, and adhere the roadbed to the foam and the ground throw to the roadbed with acrylic latex caulk (e.g. DAP Alex Plus). Like Mark, I finish it off with a track brad through each plastic ear of the CI ground throw.
My turnout frogs are also live so I use the CI 220S ground throws. Therefore, I have to make sure that the hole for the ground throw contacts is drilled out and wired before adhering it to the cork.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
I use Tom's method, except that I use gorilla glue to adhere the groundthrow to the roadbed along with two track nails.

here's a photo , hope it works
I pour little pads of concrete around the layout, just like CP does.
Actually, it is plastic molding. It is the same thickness as the cork roadbed. It comes in a 8' length for about $1.00 a length. You could also use wood, hardboard or something else. I cut about an inch off and paint it gray. Caulk it to the foam and caulk the groundthrow to that. Never had one come loose yet.
For track mounted directly to foam, I just cut out a little square in the foam an set my little pad of concrete into the foam. Just like Canadian Pacific does when they mount their track to the foam.

I used clear RTV caulk. It does not eat the foam and just a small bead will secure it. I have also used it with larger pads to mount Tortoise motors.
Thanks so much! Excellent tips! Lots of different options!
Caboose Industries ground throws were molded with nail holes probably because they were meant to be fastened down that way to either plywood or Homasote. That is exactly how I mounted mine.
So I guess if you are going with foam as a subroadbed (not my first choice), another option would be to cut out a square and glue back into place a material that you can nail them down using Atlas track nails, a piece of Homasote or plywood.
See, I'm trying to lure you back away from the dark side, back to into the light of "old school"!!

Jim, I've been meaning ask what online site you buy your buggy whips at? Even "We Honest" in China doesn't carry them and they seem to have everything.
Actually, when I mount CI's directly to foam I caulk them down and stick pins through those annoying little holes into the foam. The pins heads look like little bolt heads which is good for close up photography of those grossly oversized switch throwers.
I actually have bags of scale bolt heads for use on trestles and things that look good on those holes.
help me out here, what is a "buggy whip" ?? ??
Or is this another case if two peoples separated by a common language, you know, like Americans vs. Brits, only in this case Americans vs Hosers.
FWIW, I'm married to a brit so it's all fun and games; every now and then she'll whip out a new word just to throw me off guard again.
