Need help finalizing a track plan
Posted by conrail0721 on Sunday, July 22, 2018 3:29 PM

good day, I started to make a 3D mock up of my project layout using foam core and styren. Found the mr2008 project layout is just too big, not enough industry for operations. I thought about add some of their winter hill layout to add interest still not pleased, I keep going back to my two plans I have saved, the Clark fork, lots of stuff but very compact, the other is from the 1996 me planner, its a simplified cat mount layout to fit in regular bedroom. I feel I can adjust this one the best fit my L shape layout. I have been stuck a number of times when the bnsf comes thru on my way home. Except they hay up engines, but the train is made up of coal cars, box cars, tank cars and plywood loads.. I can adjust the scenery and the industries, .. Any suggestion, this is my first real layout, I have just used a a project layout and added a yard before and auto unloading area on my last layout 20 years ago.

Thanks

Think you might get more and quicker help if you could show a link or draw a sketch of the plans you are referring to.

Also, what does your space look like?  A drawing of that will help our planner folks come up with ideas.

What scale are you planning to use?

Good luck,

Richard

Switching layout or continuous loop? If a switching layout, I don't think the UP trains you mention would work since they are primarily "through" trains plus probably too long for your layout. If a switching layout, you probably would want a staging area that can serve as a place for loads to originate or be a destination for the traffic that is serving your industries.

Did you mean to say continuous loop instead the second time you said "If a switching layout"?

I have no idea why it typed the whole thing in grey like that....

I'm beginning to realize that Windows 10 and sound decoders have a lot in common. There are so many things you have to change in order to get them to work the way you want.

Yes I would like some larger engines like mac 80 or 90, I know they r too big on the layout. I tried to paste the photo it showed in my screen but didn’t transfer. The Clark fork in the mr layout database. I just found a photo of the cat mountain by using google. It looks like it has 24inch curves, I know I need 32 or 36. I think David used #5 or 6 turn outs .. if some can suggest how to add drawings more then happy to help

The up engines r real trains that I see on my way home from work.. I live in central Arkansas, so we r on the BnSf route and NS.  I grew up a conrail follower because that what I saw.. NS has been my second favorite because of the logo.. didn’t see much up till I did military service in Montana..

Does this mean you're going to build a version of the Clark Fork?  Loved that layout from first glance!  Interestingly for me, the track plan does not inspire me near as much as the actual layout does...  Flann is an awesome modeler!
