I used Kalmbach's book on engine and service facilities for my designs. Lots of pictures and building tips. I found that the track length to the turntable is pretty much determined by the angle of the bays on the model.
Using the books method, I placed the roundhouse on the platform and drew a line from the center line of each track. Where they all intersect is the middle point of the turntable. This results in a straight track into the building. If you want, the turntable can be much further away and lead in tracks can curve into the building. Space available will be the biggest issue really.

Hi,
Does any one have a source of info on designing an engine service terminal and 130' turntable? I need to know the distance between the engine facility and the edge of the turntable.I also need to know the different service tracks required as well as their proper positioning.[:p]
