I would strongly suggest getting in touch with Lionel's customer service or as Randy suggested.....try the ''Classic Toy Trains forum.'' They have more than one of those on the market and have been upgraded to include better electronics...Your's appears to be Post War according to Your photos.

Without tracing the circuit, I'm going to say the new control won;t drive the old gantry. See those 4 cylindrical black parts on the left side of the new board? Those are diodes and the new one must use some sort of what's called diode steering to activate the proper motors based on how you move the lever. The old one has no such thing, or the period equivalent, which would NOT be small black cylinders. Also it looks like the new one uses 6 wires, and the old one used only 5.
This looks like the Lionel Gantry Crane - someone on the Classic Toy Trains forum would likely have more information, but that's my opinion looking at the two and the differences between them.

That's definitely a good idea. I'd meant to yesterday but didn't have time to track down the #s. Also, how do I post a picture? I try the "insert" option but it seems like it only allows for net based pics. THANKS!

Your first few posts are moderated, so there will be a bit of a delay before anyone sees your question. This stops soon enough. Just bear with it for a bit.
Could you please supply some detail about the manufactururer, scale, and model number if you know it?
This will help in answering your question.

Living the dream.
HELP! I purchased a Gantry crane and the controller didn't have a "lock" for the magnet. So I purchased an older model control which had the lock option. After spending a couple hours tracing leads and trying to match the action from the wiring of the controls then trying different combinations to try to get it to work I got nothing. I know the crane works with the new model controller, and after getting frustrated with the wiring I just put the new model controller back in. But I REALLY want to get the old model version working.
I couldn't figure out how to attach my pics here, but will do so ASAP.
I'm a NOVICE when it comes to wiring, so any help in basic pictures or drawings would genuinely be appreciated. THANK YOU!
