Deck Girder Bridge walkway railings
Posted by TBat55 on Sunday, January 7, 2018 7:58 AM

Where can I find walkway railing supports that attach to the sides of deck girders (HO)?  Like these:

Deck girder railing supports

The only other way to do it (that I know of) is extending the ties, offsetting the track (for MOW clearance, etc), or making/molding pieces.  I will be using flexible bridge track with guardrails and many bridge sections for a tall steel viaduct.

Thank you!  That link is VERY helpful.

I  searched a lot, including these forums, but did not find much.

Here are a few pic's

On this trestle, the extended ties only stick out on the one side for the walkway. I have noticed often, where there are walkways on both sides the ties are staggered, meaning the same extended tie does not support both sides.

Sometimes the extended tie is crammed in between the regular ties and the spacing gets a little thrown off. Other times the extended tie has been cut thin with a chainsaw so it can just slide in between the other ties.

I have seen small "I-Beams" instead of ties across the rails (underneath) that fit easily between the ties, with angle iron or "I-Beams" used as the stanchions as well. They were usually welded.

When metal was used instead of ties it lowered the walkway and that made the ends of the ties easily visible for inspection.

Don't be too fussy. Over the years of walking the rails in the Rockies, good solid repairs are always made, however, things don't always match the original construction.

It would be easy to scatch build the ones you want in your pic. Once painted and weathered, they would look good.

Terry,

Plastruct makes ready made styrene/ABS railings, stairs/railings for stairs in all scales if interested......HO (1:100) is for HO scale:

I used them on My scratch/bash Scherzer Rolling lift bridge project:

Browse the site for other styles of railings......

Once again these forums come to the rescue!

I will be doing the extended ties because I like seeing the girder sides.  Every 4 or 5 ties.  My viaducts are 26" and 30"R, so only doing walkways on the outer side.  Wire rope (piano wire) for railings. Will post a photo when done.

Thank you all.
