Never had problems with anybodys decoders and I use several different makes. All have been dependable. Those that are listed as specific to a model only indicate that they are known to fit well or plug in without much or any modification. Price goes up usually due to the number of functions available. If you want power and headlamps only stick with a basic decoder.

All the decoders are pretty much the same from a quality aspect. My best advice would be to always use the one that fits the best. In the case where more than one vendor makes a decoder to fit a particular application, then you have to look at other features.
When you get down to it, it's possible to use the cheapest hard-wired decoders in just about ANY situation, but as much as I actually enjoy electronics and soldering, I still prefer to use the simple drop in replacement type where available, and save the work for the ones where there is no other choice.

Decoders

I'm in the process of building my first layout and I'm giving DCC some serious considerations. (It just makes more sense to me than the ATLAS block system with its switches and relays.)

My current layout is a 4 x 8' - with potential to expand. [:)] I will probably only run 2-3 locomotives at any one time. I'm trying to learn what I can about DCC before I purchase a system. I do have a question about decoders that I'm hoping you all might be able to help me with.

Now, I understand that there are various decoder manufacturers. And that each manufacturer has a specific decoder for a specific locomotive or locomotives. And that fancier decoders have more "bells and whistles" (no pun intended) and can perform more functions than basic decoders can.

My question is: Are there better decoder manufacturers and decoders than others? Or, are they all pretty much about the same? Have you had any bad experiences with any one decoder manufacturer?

Thanks for your input. I look forward to hearing what you all have to say.
