While I agree with supporting your local shop if possible I really hate hearing--I can order it for you for a item that should be readily stocked. Well gee whiz I can do that and save money and the need to make a second trip.
But,be that as it may.
I'm to the point now where buying at a LHS is superior to online since I need very little and only buy freight cars one at a time and there's little savings when buying one car plus shipping over MSRP.

Except I have one of those cash back credit cards so I save money with it. And while I have offered cash for a reduction of part of the credit card fee, I haven't found any merchant that will do it.
However, a number of train show only dealers do have cash only prices (or they'll take care of the sales tax). There I do use cash.

Credit card fees paid by merchants are much lower than in decades past, and generally do not represent a percentage that would prompt a dealer to give you an additional discount for cash these days.
And since I don't have to hide my purchases from my wife, there is no advantage to cash. Like Paul said, most of my credit cards provide some sort of rebate, saving me more money as I put more of my activity on them and pay them in full when due.
We have a particular card that pays back in gas price rebates, my wife seldom pays more than $1.50 a gallon to fill up her car as a result......
