The John Armstrong book Track Planning for Realistic Operation would help you out alot. In it he tells of drawing by the "squares", which will tell you what will fit in your available space. Also, it has invaluable information on prototype trackage and how it can be condensed for model railroad use. I wish it had been out when I started my layout. I have reworked some track after reading it.

Sounds like a simple around the wall with a single penisula into the middle of the room would do the trick. Your helix to get from level to level would most likely work best located at the end of the penisula. Of course, use the helix to put ample staging under your lower level and/or above your highest level. Another option, if you do not like a helix, is to have the layout climb as it goes around the room. A quick calculation says that each level will have about 75 feet of mainline. At a 2% grade, you could achieve 18 inches of seperation between levels.

I would go to my LHS and buy some Atlas Model RR track planning books. These are your best bet to see what you can put in the available space and also adjust to your liking. Take the best parts you like and see what you come with. You just might surprise yourself with what you can build in this space. With two levels you will need more help than I can give you. Take your time and have a lot of fun showing off your new layout. And be sure to tell everyone------Ain't it great!!

16 x 14' layout

OK, sometimes, one just has to ask for help.

I'm trying to get the ball rolling on my layout planning.

I have a room (16' x 14') with no closets, and a door that will open outward, so it can truly go around all walls.

I am modeling BNSF in the modern era, with intermodal and other industies. I also understand that my choice will make it necessary to make two levels.

Can anyone help with some existing track plans that would fit this bill..or close to it? I could make some changes, I just have problems with a totally blank canvas.

Thanks[?][?]
