Raptorengineer,

Well I built mine about 13yrs. ago, I don't recall if they recommended any kind of paint...I used Tamiya Acrylic #XF-16 which is Flat Aluminum, air-brushed on...I did not want any kind of shiny finish so I chose the Aluminum, which is sorta semi-gloss, with a hint of metallic to it.

I had it off the layout last month and on one of My work benches, to change the incandesant lights I had in it, to SMD's (surface mount diodes), I wanted more light in it so the full interior would show up better. I set up My layout so all structures are removeable.

I used some Hobby Lobby acrylic called "platinum", brushed on.  Looks ok.

raptor,

Like Frank, I also used Tamiya but used their Bare-Metal Silver (AS-12) and spray-painted it using one of their aerosol cans:

The paint goes on in thin layers (due to their superior nozzle) and highlights the exterior details quite nicely.  The kitchen and counters were done in the same color and the linoleum floor has been spray-painted in a checkerboard fashion.  I added individual wood flooring strips behind the counters.

The original plan was for the black & white tiles to touch at the corners but I taped it incorrectly.  As it turned out I like the look of this better because it would seem "too busy-looking" the other way.

I also chose to remove most of the booths from the interior (except for the one's pictured at the bottom of the 2nd pic, sans tables) because they seem too close together and HO-scale figures would look pretty cramped.  I also plan to ditch the thick plastic windows that came with the kit and will go with a thinner strip of mylar for the exterior windows.

Need to get some interior details in my diner like Frank's.  Frank, did you go with Woodland Scenic figures and detailing for that?

Yes, both the interior and entire exterior (including back, roof, and storage building) are all spray-painted the same Bare-Metal Silver (AS-12).  The roof is also flat and I was thinking that two-tone scale gravel might look good on top.

Tom,

The figures are Woodland Scenics. All the other details are from Preiser Art#17220 back when they were 14.99, now I think they are in the 30.00 range, if they still make them. All bottles and glass items were clear styrene, plates, cups, saucers and food of all kinds were white plastic. I did have to paint the food.. You can't tell from the pic', but there are egg's cooking on the grill...sunny side up..LOL, along with a steak. Also has silverware, serving plates, etc. in silver plastic. All in all, You could detail quite a few scenes, with all that is in the Pkg.

In this pic'....Food and utensils are from the Preiser Pkg. Pot belly stove and some other parts are JL Inn.. The guy is one of those figures that You can bend to shape...God only knows where I got that from, cause I sure don't remember.

Sorry to be late to the party...........  I used Testors "steel", but aluminum or silver would work as well.  Remember, those stainless buildings weathered a lot over the years.............

ENJOY  !
