If you have access to MR's digital archive (or otherwise have access to the issue) check out the November 1958 issue of MR for an article on his Norfolk & Ohio layout, preceded by a truly impressive photo that takes up two pages; one of the more realistic photos ever published in MR.

That's too funny, I just replied to the OO thread on the main section and mentioned Carl. He had a rather large OO layout back in the day which was featured in MR at least once. Appel Jewelers is still in business in Allentown. Very well known to locals.

I googled Carl Appel and found an obit from June 1997.  He apparently lived in Coopersburg and owned Appel's Jewelry in Allentown.  http://articles.mcall.com/1997-06-25/news/3140250_1_big-game-east-africa-allentown-elks-club

Anybody have any knowlege of him? Excellent OO gauge modeler of the N&W and C&O. Built a rr called the Norfolk and Ohio. MR had an article in the late 50s. Lived in Allentown Pa. Assume he has long gone to the great rr in the sky but wonder what happened to his rr. He ran 100 car trains.
