I want to thank everyone who replied and gave me quick responses to this problem. I did install the cdu and notme the switch machines operates perfectly. Not a hum or buzzing noise at all is to be heard. Thanks again to everyone who has replied and will reply in the future.
You say youir power source is 18 volts - but how many amps? It sounds like it may be underpowered for throwing solenoid switch machines. The CDU will definitely help.
Since they are used - is there glue/ballast residue around the moving parts? When you move the little nub by hand to switch them, it should move smoothly with just a slight resistence at the very ends of the movement. If it feels sticky or rough in the middle of the throw, they may have some glue or dirt binding them up a little - it doesn't take much and the solenoid cannot move the armature the full distance.
Another reason to hook up that CDU - the Atlas N scale switch machines are rather delicate, and the buttons have a tendency to stick. Stuck button (or just holding it down slightly longer than necessary) and a normal power source = burnt out switch motor. The CDU provides a stronger initial jolt but then limits continuous power so the switch throws but then holding down the button or it getting stuck will not burn it out, the CDU does not recharge until the button is released.

The CDU is exactly what you need. I would assume it comes with a wiring diagram.
Did you buy these snap-switches new or used? If they are used, they may need some cleaning, and that may be what's making them stick. Or, if you've fastened them down to tight or gotten glue or ballast around the throwbar, that would be a problem, too. How do they work when you flip them by hand? Does the throwbar seem free to move?

Would also like to add that I did purchase a peco cdu from my local hobby shop today but haven't even taken it out of the package yet. I have never used one of these before so could I even wore it to the atlas switches or how can I do this?
Hello everyone I am new to this site but not to the hobby. I recently purchased a pile of n scale atlas code 80 snap switches. I got them all wired up to the controllers as showed on the packaging. I went to test each one to make sure it worked before moving onto wire the next switch. I noticed that the switching rails are not moving far enough from side to side And causing derailments or my locos are completely bypassing the switched track all together. I have also noticed on top of the motor cover on the switches that the manual switch button is not locking into place in either direction. If I use my hand and put it in place and try the push button switch again it just hums and don't switch. I am assuming there's not enough power going to the coils but I don't know how to correct this problem. I am using an ac controller that is outputting 18v and using 22 gauge solid wire. Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong or what to do. Thanks
