Hello All

Here is the plan for my Union Pacific layout.  Room is 22 X 14.  No duckunders.  This will be about my 6th layout but the first one in our new home.

Great plan.

I have to say that UP has my loyalty for obvious reasons.

How does your track plan mirror UP operation, as compared to other Railroad companies?

I have been starting the splines.  First I printed out the plan with a 6" grid on it.  Then placed a nail along the centerline of the tracks on the bench framing.

then clamp the splines to the nails and glue another piece.  Stagger the joints.  I think I will end up with six laminations.

Indeed very good. I wish I had done continuous run with staging. I have the space ... I just was dumb.

Your layout is coming along nicely.

Can I ask how high it is off the floor, and do you intend to run it from a sitting or standing position? The height of the office chair suugests that the track will be just below eye level when you are sitting.

operate standing up.  Rail heights are between 49" and 54"max. to the floor.  I am 6'4" tall so it is low to me.  I want the trains to be closer to eye level.  Be in the scene not looking down on it.

Thinking of making changes.  This plan saves the yard and has a more linear feel to it.  Shallower grades 1.1% or less.  I am currently only at the benchwork stage and the rework will not be that great.  What do you think of the new plan?

Not enough walkway room, don't go below 30" or you will not bhe happy as you shuffle though the layout sideways.

I will look at the tight areas.  i can make the area at the top near the main yard 30".  along the bottom I can make 30" also.  there is going to have to be three 24" pinch points that I see.

If you have one operator 30 inch aisles are OK.  If you have more than one, you should be very close friends with them  because it will get tight.  In most cases the aisles are not as wide as they are drawn.  Switch linkages/controls, control panels, throttle holders, car card pockets, train registers, hooks for clipboards for train lists, phones, radios, etc., etc. intrude into the aisle space.   I had nominal 36 inch aisles and I went to a lot of trouble to recess all the controls and car card boxes into the fascia (the "clean cab" approach) with only throttle holders and a few clip board hooks intruding into the aisle space.  My current layout will have nominal 44-48" aisles, with a couple narrow spts down to 36".
