There are lots of materials you can substitute for foam core.  You could try everything from Gatorboard to plywood, depending on what you're willing to work with and the skills you have.  Large sheets of foam core board may be available through suppliers that specialize in materials for advertising displays or art supplies.  You can also order direct http://www.foamcore.com/ .  Foam core has a fairly high density and heavy paper facing, so is different to work with compared to foam insulation sheet.

Check your local big box home improvement store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. They stock the blue foam insulation board in 2 x 8 and 4 x 8 sheets, ranging from 1/2" thick to 2" thick. Thats the stuff you need.

HO Railroad from Start to Finish Help!
Posted by Fxguy1 on Thursday, January 1, 2015 7:14 PM

Hello everyone!

New to model railroads in general and picked up a copy of the book HO Railroad from start to finish by Jim Kelly from the local library and decided to start going through it as a good introduction. Problem is that the very first article / chapter on building table requires 1/2" thick foam core board in 40 X 60" sheets.

I was able to find 40" X 32" sheets at Hobby Lobby but they are only 3/16" thick. Not too keen on the idea of gluing up 3 sheets for thickness either. Any other ideas or options on how to proceed?

Thanks!

Tim
