Yes you can, but you must make sure that the inside and top surfaces line up so you don't have a bump. One way this can be done is by using a code 80 rail joiner and crimping one end and soldering the code 55 to the top of it .

Can I join code 55 track to code 80 without causing problems for my locos and rolling stock ?
