DCC decoder-# of functions?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 13, 2004 12:16 PM
While waiting for some literature to arrive, I have started looking into DCC decoders for my locos (some P2K GP9's, GP30's, an S-1, plus a few Athearn BB diesels) and most of the decoders list 1, 2, 4, or 6 functions. I don't seem to be able to find anything that tells me what a function is. What are the functions? I would expect movement and lighting, so would that equal 2 functions?

Functions refer to lights and other stuff, not movement.

Function 0 is always the lights. It is also further divided into FoF for forward light and F0R for reverse light. Some manufacturers call that 2 functions, because it is physically 2 different wires from the decoder and you CAN use it for more than just lights.

For the locos you are talking about, you really don;t need more than a single (or two, depending on how the maufacturer labels it) decoder. Any extras would be, well, extras.

For the P2K's the easiest decoder to install is the Digitrax DH163L0, it plugs right in, no issues withthe low voltage bulbs or anything. It actually is a '6 function' decoder Digitax considers the two light outputs as 2 functions, so that means there are 4 extras on that decoder). Be warned that the S-1 requires a little rewiring to be truly DCC ready. The DH163L0 won't fit in it without a little shaving of the weight, so there are better choices that are smaller. But any other decoder will require replacing the lights with higher voltage ones. For Athearn - the TCS T1 is very inexpensive and runs the stock Athearn motor very nicely.

I second what rrinker said, the DH163LO is the best way to go with P2K's it all I use, takes the better part of 5 seconds to install.

Except for the headlight and backup light, most locomotives don't need any other functions unless you have a sound system, so a decoder with all of these extra functions is unnecessary.
