re-doing an American Flyer layout
Posted by no train guy on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 9:12 PM

A year ago or so I put together an ambitious first effort after fiddling with any-rail.  Through 5 or six revisions I landed on something I thought would fit the bill...and it was a disaster.  Big enough, but reeally lacking in any polish or purpose.

" alt="" />I made efforts to improve it, adding sidings, some staging, and various attempts at function...and then took it apart.  The space is good, and in my head I can see it's potential, but putting it into practice has proven beyond my grasp.

This is the last iteration sans "useless upgrades".

Welcome to the forums.

You may do better going to the Classic Toy Train section of these forums, as most of the folks here are in HO and N scale.  Go to the top of this page, find Trains.com Sites and CTT will be listed.

Before you write your next post think a little about what you want to do on your layout.  Do you want continuous running, switching, what location, what era?  All these things will help others make meaningful suggestions to you.  Also, give the size space you have and any obstructions such as, doors, windows, posts, appliances, electric boxes that will need access or meters.

Good luck,

Richard

no train guy,

Welcome from a fellow American flyer guy.

What type of locomotive(s) do you have?

What type of power source (transformer) are you using.

Do you have the old track from the 1950s?

Tell us more.

Rich

P.S.   The Classic Toy Trains (CTT) forum seems like the right place but, in reality, most of those guys are Lionel so the responses may be few and far between.

notrainguy,

Don't get discouraged, the planing is definately a lenghty process.  As mentioned above if you can answer soe of ther questions posted above you will get plenty of tips and suggestions from thre forum members.

I got great help almost a year ago, everal guys provided suggestions, and multiple people actually drew up some track plans for me.

God luck with your planning,

Aflyer

Thanks for responding Richard.

The picture is accurate with 12" grids showing the two windows, closet, and door.  It was actually "Aflyer"'s build thread that inspired my re-do, and I'll be honest I tried to rip it off for my own use but failed miserably.

The idea was a free form of the local industries form the late 40's, primarily furniture manufacturing, gypsom mining, and the associated industries that would have served these, steel and lumber.  Wolverine brass works was located along the river, and I planned to incorporate something similar too.

I also wanted a small switching yard.

Thanks for responding Rich.

I've collect a couple hudsons, one atlantic, a 350 converted to a "non-traditional" color to serve the fictional resort community of Shady Pines pulling three re-trucked O pullmans, a 342 and 470 switchers, and a box of junk to scavange parts.

I'm using all flyer track.

We've chatted in the past on another forum.  I intend no offense when I say I blame you for my current situation.

Really, I love your track plan.  I really came together nicely, and look forward to seeing it complete.

notrainguy,

Glad you like my track plan, I kinda like it too. I haven't made as much progress as I had hoped, but other projects and just stuff gets in the way.

I have made a little progress since the last photos, but the room has some issues right now, storing things that were moved for Christmas decorations, along with all my construction mess and piles of track, roadbed and plywood parts.  I will try to get some clean up done and add some photos soon.

Oh yeah did I mention I am also doing a remodel on the bathroom??  I guess that is a topic for a different forum.

Happy New Year all,

Aflyer

It seems to me that MRR not exclusive to just the Toy vs scale market.  I for one reason Lionel blogs even though my layout is HO.

I also have looked at converting a Lionel track plan to HO.
