Hi everyone:
I've been working on an interesting project for my layout - a working model of a sliding derail to protect the bottom of an elevated coal dealer's siding. The photo below shows the area around the base of the incline, with the derail located at right, next to the yellow post that indicates it to crews. I've also included a photo of the derail under construction on the workbench.
The derail is scratch-built from brass strips, shapes, and sheets, and it's operated by a manual switch machine connected to a control on the layout fascia. It adds an extra step for train crews during operating sessions.
