I'm not sure what number my turnouts are. They are 18" radius motorised made in Slovenia, HO scale the straight is 9" long. Can anybody tell me if they are any good, will most loco's handle them ok

Turnouts that curve all the way through the diverging leg don't really have a number.
The number refers to the number of units of length beyond the frog to achieve one unit of separation. That is a number 4 turnount take 4 inches beyond to have one unit of separation - 8 inches to get 2 inches. It's a measurement of the frog angle and is based on straight lines. Based on equipment that it can handle an 18" radius curve turnout is roughly equivalent to a number 4 turnout. Small locomotives should have no problem. Bigger one depend on the manufacturer - some will go around 18", some won't.

I Have an old Athern 4 axle diesel which handles the turnouts no trouble and Im looking for something in steam not really sure. My LHS has a few used, with a warranty, Im on a budget so one of them should do!!
