Yes use the flex track by all means as Kato does not make anything over 11 inches and the conversion track is nice and if you plane on running Dcc this will also cut down on your feeder track connections.The only thing you have to worry about is your roadbed as Woodland scenically foam roadbed is nice it is not the same height as cork roadbed so you have to adjust accordingly to stay the same as Kato unitrack height. The transition piece is not needed. Kato can be connected directly to Peco, (Atlas, or any other brand code 80 flex track or standard, without roadbed, sectional track) using standard rail joiners. Just remove the plastic clip joiner from the Kato. It's a snap fit. The only potential "problem" is vertical alignment which is easily fixed with built-up roadbed and shims.
I haven't looked at other brands of "roadbed" track.
Different brands of track do have slightly different rail shapes, but In have never found this to be a problem in operation. - For instance Peco code 80 has a slightly narrower rail head and flange than Atlas code 80.
Consider Peco code 55 for sidings and spurs. It is 100% compatible with code 80 and results in a nice contrast in apparent rail size.

I'm In the process of building an N-scale layout. I will be running a double main line. The question/ dilemma I have is that I had originally planned on using Kato Unitrack exclusively, but now as I progress along in the building the layout the amount of Unitrack is huge. My layout is 22 feet in length. I am now thinking of using Peco code80 Flextrack for the majority of the mainline. Any thoughts good or bad about combining the 2 types of track?? Thanks
