Updated layout design
Posted by Doc in CT on Monday, March 26, 2012 1:24 PM

I've been doodling with the layout design a bit (see http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/p/203393/2225997.aspx#2225997 for previous designs and discussion).  The latest incarnation has been simplified a tad and has more possibilities for operation.  Personally I have no problem with the Waterbury yard on the outside of layout, since on can use the yard while trains loop around, or assemble and dispatch a train or two and watch it (them) disappear into the rest of the layout (there are several paths for that).
Alternately, one can be "inside" and work the yard in Hartford or manage though and local trains in Springfield especially if I single track the right side (see next).

One consideration is that most of the right of way here in CT is single track.  There is no room at the left side to single track.  I do have a possible single track solution (see Fig 2).  I'm not sure it adds much to single track that section given that running trains in 2 directions would be preferable.  Of course it would add to the operation "fun" single tracked.  Feedback on this is appreciated.

I understand and appreciate the perspective of the operations people, but that is not the primary objective of the layout.

Thanks
Alan
