While waiting to purchase my new house where my layout will ultimately reside, I've decided to start building sections of it as dioramas that can be placed into the final layout when I'm ready to build it. I've started the first diorama, which measures 2' x 5'. I've built the diorama 49" high, although when it is installed permanently it will likely be even higher. It took me about 3 hours over all to complete this small table. There are some photos at the following link if anyone wants to see them, they are at the bottom of the page.

looks great but i'd like to add some constructive (incouragement)....you might want to consider putting in some cross braces on the table legs or the screws will eventually work their way out of the bench frame...also if the table is bumped without cross braces, the earthquake created will knock the cars from the track...Chuck[:D]

When the benchwork is more permanently installed it will definately have braces. I didn't add any now because I need it to be highly portable. The legs are bolted on rather than screwed, so they're pretty sturdy for as tall as it is.

I would suggest that you make the legs in an "L" shape and bolt them to the side frames. Glue and screw the legs together, then bolt to each side frame. On a 2' x 5' section you won't need braces because the "L" shape will give you stability in two directions. I built a 4 x4 table using this method and it is very stable. The legs were in the corners only. [:)] I used 1x4's for the legs
