Atlas Code 55 Switch problems!
Posted by mjmueller on Monday, December 5, 2011 10:45 AM

Hello,

I am running Atlas Code 55 Switches on my layout.  I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with cars bumping over them?  Seems like the switch lead is higher than the track for some reason.  Also, maybe the plastic that holds the leads is to big or something.  This doesn't happen on all, but most.  Is there a way to correct this, or help?

First make sure that all the wheels on your cars are in gauge: you'd be surprised at how many "problems" with Atlas C55 turnouts disappear when your wheels are in gauge, especially when going through frogs.

The other issue with Atlas C55 turnouts involves the little bumps along the ties next to the rails:

You can see the original bumps in the red circles on the outside of the rail.

Just take a file and go a couple passes over them on the inside of the rails (where the flanges run), and that'll take them down enough for no problems.
(The filed bumps are in the yellow circles).

Other than that, make sure the turnouts are install flat, with no lift up in the middle.

Hope this helps.
