It's funny how fast reality sets in. When I got back into the hobby I thought I had the space and funds to model the western terminus of the CPR on the Vancouver waterfront. My room wasn't 300' long though.

tomikawaTTGiven the configuration of the yard and the configuration of my layout I might be able to model the caboose track - if it had one...
This photo was taken right by the old wooden observation platform on the west side of the loco shops. This was about 2 years(?) before they built the golden spike observation tower.
Here's some great pics & plans:

Given the information from the site Svein posted, in HO it would be some 485' long, 121' wide, with over 19117' of HO track. Does anybody own a bank? Cost of track and turnouts alone would strain most of our combined budgets. Then add all the locos and cars that pass through there every day.
Have fun,
Richard
Reference my earlier post:
Looks like my guesstimate of the length was in the ballpark, but I underestimated the width by a factor of 3.
Do you realize that sucker is over a mile wide? I could drop my double garage filler into that puzzle palace and lose it!

Could someone please give us neophytes some more information on just where this 'Bailey Yard' is? I'll try to look it up on Google but I just know I'm going to end up with pics of an English jail...
That's sounds really cool. Are you going to use the same track configurations? That should be interesting hi HO.
Keep us posted with your plans and progress.

I think i am going to do a small version of the yard like the diesel shop and fuel station , some of the east hump yard . I only have a basement not high school gym to work in. I am going to scratch build the diesel shop it will be big but it will be sweet. I wasn't going to model anything special just do a freelance layout, but i think that much of the bailey
yard would be nice then i will go from three,
That would be great. Would require lots of selective compression. But maybe could you could model the basic elements, including the flyover.
Motley Are you kidding me? That would be impossible to model. You would have to have a 100' x 100' basement, and still have to compress it.

I wonder if you could model Bailey Yard in Z scale in that 100' x 100' basement.

Not in HO. Even if it wasn't something like 20 feet wide, it would be close to a hundred yards long.
That's just the yard facility. Now factor in some mainline, plus adequate staging...
Just the tortoises needed for the turnouts would cost as much as a pretty decent new car!
Of course, Bailey Yard HAS been modeled - once. The scale was 1:1...
