Lumber Yard Pond

Most lumber mill operations I researched have a pond right outside where the logs are floated until they are taken into the mill to be cut. Did the logs get to the pond by railcar or some other method ?

Depends on the era and the distance of the millpond from the timberland. Commonly by log cars on rail, earlier by horses, horse-drawn sleighs, or even horse-drawn rail cars may have been used. Steam tractors and around WWI, the LInn tractor became popular, especially up here in the Adirondacks.

In a few cases the logs arrived by water, from a flume or from a connection to a stream that ran through or was adjacient to the logging area and the mill.
